Keeping pets responsibly at home

A dog

We know pets are an important part of family life, and we support responsible pet ownership. At the same time, we need to make sure homes and shared spaces feel safe.

Here’s a reminder of what you need to know about keeping pets as a tenant with us.

Permission to keep a pet
If you have a pet, or are thinking about getting one, you must ask for permission first.

When we look at a request, we’ll consider:

  • Whether your home is suitable
  • The type and size of the animal
  • Access to outdoor space and the fencing and flooring in your home

Keeping a pet without permission is a breach of your contract and could lead to further action.

If you’re not sure whether you already have permission, please get in touch with our community housing team communityhousingteam@taitarian.co.uk or call 0300 777 0000.

Being a responsible pet owner
If you own a pet, you’re responsible for making sure they are well cared for, properly supervised and not causing noise, nuisance or distress to neighbours.

In the case of dogs, they must be kept under control or in a separate room when staff or contractors visit your home. If this doesn’t happen, the visit may need to be cancelled and rearranged.

They will also need to be kept on a lead in communal areas and cleaned up after in shared and public spaces. By law, all dogs must be microchipped and registered with up to date owner details. This helps reunite lost dogs with their owners and supports responsible ownership.

Banned and restricted dog breeds
If you own a dog that is classed as a banned or restricted breed under current legislation (including XL Bully dogs), you must meet all legal requirements. This may include:

  • Holding a valid Certificate of Exemption
  • Ensuring the dog is correctly registered
  • Following all control measures set out in law
  • Failure to comply with these laws is a serious offence.

By following these guidelines, you help keep your home, neighbours, and our colleagues safe.
