Spotlight on the Copper Foundation

Tuesday 10 March 2026

As part of our 15th birthday celebrations, we’re looking back at some of the initiatives that have made a real difference in our communities. First up is our stepping stone into work initiative, the Copper Foundation.

At Tai Tarian, we believe in being fair. That means making sure everyone has equal access to employment and the chance to build new skills. Since it launched in 2017, the Copper Foundation has helped 110 people restart their careers and grow in confidence.

Copper Foundation recruits join us on a 12‑month contract, where they learn practical skills that help them move into permanent work. They also receive support with things like CV writing and interview techniques, giving them the best possible start on their career journey.

Much of their work is on our externals programme, where they gain hands‑on experience in areas such as fencing, concreting and grounds work.

“I love the job, seeing people come through, learn new skills and go on to further work.
So many people’s lives have been changed as a result of the Copper Foundation, and I still keep in touch with many of them. It’s great to see how they’re doing now.”
Maelgwyn Coleman, Copper Foundation Supervisor

Many former recruits have remained with Tai Tarian and flourished in a range of roles including grounds maintenance, caretaking, repairs, roofing, with our arborist team, and even becoming supervisors within the Copper Foundation itself.

One of them is Ian, who is now one of our neighbourhood caretakers.

“I went on to work with the facilities team, helping to look after our main office building. Now I’m out in the community, looking after our blocks of flats. None of this would have been possible without the opportunities the Copper Foundation gave me.”
