Standing up for fair credit

Thursday 12 March 2026

As we mark our 15th birthday, we’re looking back at some of the moments that have shaped who we are. One of the most powerful came in 2017, when Welsh actor and activist Michael Sheen teamed up with Tai Tarian and the End High-Cost Credit Alliance to push for fairer access to credit in our communities.

At the time, too many people across Neath Port Talbot struggled to borrow safely. High‑interest loans, mounting debt and financial stress were everyday realities for many households. We wanted to end that.

“I’ve been working with Tai Tarian from the very beginning. They’ve been fundamental in helping us connect deeply with the community. Too many people here have been getting an unfair deal, and access to credit when you need it is one of the most important.”

When the End High-Cost Credit Alliance launched, we were among the first organisations to get involved. We brought real stories from tenants in Sandfields, Taibach, Margam, Briton Ferry and Baglan, helping shape the Alliance’s early priorities and putting Neath Port Talbot at the heart of the conversation.

This partnership grew even stronger and a year later, we helped launch the Wales Affordable Credit Action Group, bringing together organisations who shared one goal: to create fair, ethical alternatives to high‑cost credit.

“I want what happens on the streets of Sandfields, Taibach, Margam and Baglan to influence offices in Westminster. People shouldn’t just give opinions, they should see real change happen because of them.” Michael Sheen

One moment in particular reshaped our approach.

One of our carpenters visited a tenant to carry out a routine repair. During the visit, the tenant broke down in tears over repayments had become impossible to manage.

That honest conversation between a tenant and our tradesperson led us to give our own people the tools to support tenants directly.

With support from Toynbee Hall, a leading financial health charity, we created Money Mentors, a bespoke training programme designed to equip staff with the confidence and skills to support tenants facing money worries.
