Installing solar panels
Solar panels can offer numerous advantages your home. They harness renewable energy from sunlight, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and lowering household carbon footprints. They can also cut energy bills and make you less vulnerable to fluctuating utility costs.
Beyond financial benefits, solar panels contribute to a cleaner environment, promoting a healthier future for all.
Over the next year, we will be installing solar panels to 850 of our homes, as we aim to become a carbon neutral organisation. We’ve been doing extensive research on our homes, selecting which ones will get the most benefit from the panels.
If we think your home is suitable, we will send you a letter offering you the panels and giving you further details about what happens next.
Benefits of solar energy
- Will help reduce your electricity bill
- The long lifespan of a solar PV system means consistent savings over time
- Clean and renewable – no harmful emissions, contributing to a cleaner environment and a more sustainable planet
- Low maintenance – once installed, the panels require minimal upkeep
Myth busting
Like anything, there can be some common myths around solar panels. We’ve tried to explain some of these here:
Myth: Having solar panels will cost me a lot of money
Truth: Tai Tarian will pay for the installation and any maintenance, (however, the system actually requires very little maintenance.)
Myth: The work takes weeks and will cause a lot of disruption
Truth: Installing solar panels takes between 1-2 days. Disruption will be kept to a minimum, and you will have a dedicated tenant liaison officer to talk you through the process.
Myth: I won't save any money
Truth: Your bills will be lower than those whose electricity comes entirely from energy suppliers.
Myth: I have been previously told my house isn't facing the right way or is unsuitable for solar panels
Truth: We have done the work to identify which homes would benefit from solar power and that is why you have received this booklet.
Myth: I’d like solar panels but haven’t been contacted yet. Can I have them now?
Truth: We have a plan, that we call a 'Tenant Energy Pathway', which will help us meet Welsh Government targets. To do this we will be rolling out our solar panels is a specific way, making sure things run smoothly and fairly for everyone. This means that it may take us a while to get to your home.
Myth: I will have to pay to maintain them, or I will be charged if I move
Truth: There is no annual servicing, and the solar panels are maintenance free and self-cleaning due to the angle they are installed at. They will undergo an electrical test every five years which we are responsible for. There won’t be charges if you move.
Unfortunately, not every home is suitable solar panels for various technical reasons. We will be in touch with those tenants whose homes we think will be suitable.
