One of Port Talbot's local heroes

Tai Tarian has launched a brand new project aimed at celebrating the inspirational people of Port Talbot.

The social housing provider has been working with pupils at Ysgol Bae Baglan as well as local author David Brayley and film maker Adam Amor on an exhibition about local heroes.

The exhibition was originally planned to be held in Port Talbot town centre, however the coronavirus outbreak has forced it to move online.

Initially, the exhibition will focus on the stories of the town’s three famous actors, Richard Burton, Anthony Hopkins and Michael Sheen, but organisers are also inviting residents to submit photos and stories about their own local hero.

In a series of weekly challenges residents will be asked to share stories, letters, photos and even short films on those people in the town who have inspired them and explaining why they are a local hero. The best and most inspiring stories will be added to the online exhibition.

The challenges will be released every Monday morning on the project’s new website http://ptlocalheroes.wordpress.com, with people encouraged to log on and take part.  The first challenge will be available on Monday 1st June.

Overseeing the project for Tai Tarian is Project Co-ordinator, Jennifer James.  She said:
“The Local Heroes project is all about connecting the residents of Port Talbot with the town and the people who live here.  We’re lucky to have three internationally famous actors and so we hope to use them as a catalyst for encouraging people to think who else has made a difference and has inspired them.  They don’t have to be famous or well known.  It could be someone you know who does amazing things in the community and who has inspired you.

“With the current situation, we wanted to give people something positive to focus on and to be creative and send us their stories, photos and videos to include in the exhibition.”

The initiative is part of Tai Tarian’s Fusion project, which is backed by the Heritage Lottery Fund.  For more information contact Jennifer James at Jennifer.James@taitarian.co.uk
