Tai Tarian’s ambitious house building programme has taken another step forward after announcing plans for its latest development.

The social housing provider has had approval for the demolition of the Melyn Close flats near Neath. The flats will be replaced by three new smaller blocks, creating a total of 14, one-bedroom flats and 6, two-bedroom flats. The plans also include the provision of car parking and cycle storage with the surrounding area also being landscaped.

In keeping with Tai Tarian’s pledge to be carbon neutral by 2030, the new homes will be environmentally friendly properties, with high levels of insulation, a highly efficient heating system and integrated solar panels feeding green energy to each flat. They will also feature extra ventilation and LED lighting.

Port Talbot based contractor, CJ Construction (Wales) Ltd has been appointed to carry out the work, which will commence in April. The development is scheduled to take around 18 months, with the flats due to be completed in late 2021.

This work is the latest development undertaken by Tai Tarian as it seeks to increase its stock of high quality, affordable homes. Other projects currently under construction include 31 new homes at Parc Newydd, Briton Ferry as well as developments at Llys, Wern, Caewern and at Evelyn Terrace in Port Talbot. Plans are also in place for the housing association to increase its stock further in the coming year.

Speaking about the new flats, Tai Tarian Director of Assets, Andrew Carey said:
“Providing high quality homes is important to us as an organisation, not only to alleviate demand locally but to ensure our tenants have homes they can be proud of.

"We are also pleased that CJ Construction (Wales) was awarded the contract to undertake the work, as we firmly believe in supporting local business and in turn helping to create more jobs. We are currently working with them on our Evelyn Terrace development so we know that they will deliver homes of an exceptionally high quality.”

Alex Holland, Director of CJ Construction (Wales) said:
"We are delighted to be appointed as principal contractor for this project, constructing 20 new homes for Tai Tarian and bringing much needed redevelopment to the area. We see this project to be the next building block on a long journey with Tai Tarian, and look forward to engaging the local community from the outset."
