Solar panels on the roof of a house

Tai Tarian has embarked on an ambitious solar PV installation project for 383 homes as part of its sustainability efforts. The project, funded by the Welsh Government’s Optimised Retrofit programme (ORP), is expected to be completed by March 2025.

In addition to providing renewable energy, the project will contribute to Tai Tarian's net zero goals and support its commitment to the Welsh Housing Quality Standard 2023.

Traditionally, PV will generate most electricity during summer time, when days are longer and lighter, but electricity will also be generated when it’s cloudy - good news when sunny days can be limited in Wales!

Over the year, the panels should reduce electricity bills – but tenants will make bigger savings if they adapt their electricity use to make the most out of them, something our designated tenant liaison officers will be advising residents on.

Four south Wales based contractors Electrical Innovation, Gas Tech, Lectogic, and Joyners will deliver the project with Tai Tarian working closely with them and tenants to ensure good progress and minimal disruption.

Craig Mayberry Thomas, head of asset management and decarbonisation said:
“Over the past three years we have installed 454 PV systems on homes across the Neath Port Talbot. Securing additional ORP funding from Welsh Government demonstrates our commitment to enhancing energy efficiency across our homes while offering real benefits to our tenants. It’s also a positive step for us in reducing our carbon footprint and delivering on our aim of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

"Solar panels on just one of these 383 homes can reduce carbon emissions by 1.3 tonnes per year. In simple terms, that’s the equivalent of the amount of CO2 emissions that comes from using 536 gallons of petrol or charging 607,904 smartphones.”
