Right to Buy
Back in June, the UK Government announced that they would extend the ‘Right to Buy’ scheme, allowing tenants renting their homes from housing associations the right to buy them at a discounted rate.
As a consequence, we have received a number of requests from tenants asking about the possibility of purchasing their home. However, this announcement applies to England only.
Housing is a devolved issue with legislation around it determined by the Welsh Government. They decided that ‘Right to Buy’ should be abolished in Wales back in 2019 to protect the amount of affordable housing available for people who need it. The are currently no plans to bring it back.
Whilst we may occasionally sell a property, it will be for a specific reason, such as it being too expensive for us to bring it up to modern standards. Where this is the case, the proceeds from the sale are ploughed back into our development programme and goes towards the cost of building new homes.
