Next development site gets underway

Thu 27 Jun 2024

Progress has been made at our latest housing development at Heol Crwys, Cwmavon.

Our principal contractor began the demolition of 30 post-war prefabricated bungalows, which have outlived their intended lifespan.

Local residents and councillors who were there to say goodbye to the old buildings have been instrumental in the naming of the new site.

It will now be known as Golwg y Foel in a nod to the mountain that overlooks the village of Cwmavon.

The site will be largely cleared, and groundwork will begin to make way for 43 energy efficient homes. Like our County Flats development in Sandfields, the project sees some of our existing land being maximised to incorporate an additional 13 homes.

The development will be made up of one- and two-bedroom bungalows and one-bedroom apartments, incorporating solar panels and battery storage with air source heat pumps for both heating and hot water needs. This eco-conscious approach is aligned with Welsh Government requirements and our ambitions to be carbon neutral by 2030.

The site is expected to be completed towards the end of 2027, with former Heol Crwys tenants being kept up to date with progress every step of the way.

Head of Development Andrew Hall said:

“Demolition of properties is always something we try and avoid, instead regenerating homes or repurposing sites like we have done at County Flats is the preference.

However, it became increasingly clear that our homes at Heol Crwys were no longer fit for purpose, which has given us the opportunity to invest and utilise the existing area to provide our tenants with additional energy efficient, modern homes that better meet their needs and that they can be proud of.

Once the demolition is complete, our local contractor CJ Construction can begin the groundworks and start the foundations. Having worked with them on previous schemes including Pant Celydd in Margam, we know they will deliver homes of the highest quality.

The tenants that will move back to Golwg y Foel will be kept up to date with progress throughout the build and will be welcome to visit the site information area of the site office too.”
